JULY 2008

An excellent demonstration from Len Tucker on the use of hollowing tools. He used 5 different hollowing tools and varying techniques before offering other club members a chance to 'have a go'.

For those members who are about to try their hand at hollowing and buy a tool, this gave them a try before you buy experience.

The four tools used were, Roly Monroe, Hamlet, Exorcet, RS2000 and Proforme.

All tools were liked for different reasons and no one tool was preferred over another.

WELCOME

Hi! And welcome to the website of The Torbay Woodturners Club. I hope that you will find items on the site which will be of interest to you and which will encourage you to a new enthusiasm for your own woodturning.

The emphasis of the club is to involve our members, particularly the less experienced, in hands-on demonstrations and to encourage as many members as possible to submit work for the Monthly Challenge Competition which is appraised by one of our experienced turners and a critique given to consider the various aspects of design, technique and finishing.

Our age range varies across the spectrum from the relatively young to the more mature, some of whom have passed their eightieth birthday. The degree of expertise is also varied but it has to be said that most members can produce work of a very acceptable standard. That said we do welcome those with no turning experience.

Any person visiting our site who has an interest in woodturning and who lives in the Torbay area, will be most welcome to apply for membership and which we hope will be a rewarding experience.

Contact can be made through our Secretary on the ABOUT US page.

    CLUB PROJECT
Giant Chess Set

Our chess project has moved on since it began in February with a majority of the pawns now turned.

As you can see from the picture we have now started on some of the bigger pieces, namely a rook and a bishop. The knight is showing to be the most difficult due to the off centre shape on the plan, but i'm sure one of our more experienced turners will sort it out.

Updates on this projects will continue throughout the year with photos of pieces as and when they are turned.
