OIL FINISHES

Danish Oil
Danish Oil is a special formulation based on tung oil (also known as Chinese wood oil). The oil is extracted from nuts, similar in size to a brazil nut, growing on species of trees found mainly in China and some areas of South America. After processing, the oil is blended with synthetic resins, to improve hardness, and other vegetable oils. Driers and solvents are added to reduce viscosity, so that the oil may be applied with a rag or brush. The special ingredients used in Danish Oil penetrate deep into all types of timber, drying to a hard, durable and water resistant seal. Unlike varnishes it does not leave a thick film on the surface which may peel, chip or craze on ageing. The oil dries quickly in 4-6 hours dependant on ambient temperature and humidity, producing a non tacky surface.

As it is a hard drying oil, it may be used as a primer or sealer on bare wood before applying other finishes, if required. Danish Oil may be used on interior and exterior woodwork (ideal for kitchen worktops) and can be overcoated with a varnish or paint at any time, if it is desired to alter the appearance.

Tung Oil
Tung oil is made from the pressed seed from the nut of the tung tree. Tung oil is considered a drying oil much as linseed, safflower, poppy and soybean oil. When applied it provides a tough, highly water-resistant finish which does not darken noticeably with age as does linseed oil. This is not to say that it is a colorless finish; it still has a slight golden tint.

Finishing Oil
A Tung based product.Finishing oil is both a protectiive and decorative coating. it can be built to a high gloss finish giving a high level of protection against heat and moisture.

Lemon Oil
A very low build near matt finish based on lemongrass oil which imparts a subtle lemon aroma to your project. Providing a clean fresh smell it is particularly suitable for the inside of boxes and draws. This oil is also an excellent finish for turned work and interior timber projects that require a natural look.

STAINS AND DYES
Chestnut Spirit Stains
Spirit stains from Chestnut Products are quick drying and available in individual bottles or in a trial rainbow pack containing all the colours. Applied directly to bare wood or can be mixed with cellulose sealer or melamine lacquer.
Van Dyck Crystals
Dissolved in warm water and depending on how much you use will determine the richness of the red/brown colour. This dye is ideal for antiquing wood before applying french polish although other top finishes can be used.

Other
Of course there are many other stain products on the market from all the top names including Ronseal, Mylands and Rustins but what you use is up to you. Sit down and think carefully before applying stain because once it has been applied thats it.

    WOOD SEALERS
Cellulose
A very fast drying sanding sealer for use as either a base coat for melamine lacquer or to seal the pores of the timber before applying a wax finish. Because of its relatively short drying time, it is often preferred by woodturners. Brushes must be cleaned in cellulose thinners.

Acrylic
A water based alternative to cellulose or shellac. The end result is much the same, but of course being water based is low odour and obviously carries no fire risk. Use as a base for waxes or acrylic lacquers.

Shellac
The most traditional of sealers, manufactured from natural shellac only. Particularly suitable under shellac finishes like French and Button polish, it is also the ideal sealer under wax polish to produce a higher shine which does not sink away .

    LAQUERS
Acrylic
Acrylic lacquer comes in either satin or gloss. Applied from spray can or brushed on. Use on top of acrylic or cellulose sealers.

Melamine
A quick drying hard wearing lacquer applied over cellulose sealer.

Eboniser
Used to emulate the look of ebony.
