| 6" (150mm) long by 1¾ (45mm) square blank. |
Put between centres and turn until round then put a spigot on each end. |
Part off at 40mm from one end( not including spigot) |
The safest way to part off is to part most of the way through then use a saw. (lathe switched off) |

 |
| Using a 35mm Forstner bit in a jacobs chuck, drill to a depth of 5mm in the longer piece. Then using a 30mm Forstner bit drill a further 20mm. |
You should now have a hole with a recess in the longer piece of wood. |
Mount the smaller piece of wood in the jaws and using the 30mm Forstner bit drill to a depth of 20mm. |
Turn a 5mm step on the outside so that the longer piece will fit snugly onto it. |

| This is what you should have at this point. |
We chose to go with 10 dried beans as we felt it was the best sound. |
Place the beans in one of the halves then glue together using super glue. |
We used the lathe to apply pressure until the glue cured. |

 |
| Measure 20mm either side of the joint and avoid going to thin in this area. |
Now enjoy turning the shape you want. |
A neat way of decorating and disguising the joint is to press wire across the wood while it is spinning, it will eventually get hot and burn the wood. |
Sand, part off and clean up the end. |
